I'm:

  • Already looking forward to Internet Librarian 2009, after participating in Internet Librarian for the first time in 2008  :-)
  • Happy that I could present some thoughts about search engines, though sad that I needed to rush to finish on time
  • A reference librarian at Western State University College of Law (Fullerton CA)
  • A former resident of Marysville OH, Berlin, Chicago, Cambridge MA, and Bellmore NY
  • A former Google Answers Researcher
  • Glad I realized after practicing law for five years that I would really rather be an information professional
  • A Red Sox fan (though I grew up a Yankees fan)
  • Going to stop talking about myself now

My presentation was the Book Search portion of Book Search & Catalog Search (Monday 2:15).

As part of the presentation, I will briefly demonstrate intended to demonstrate two search engines (but only had time for one): Nutch and Webglimpse.  The following screenshots are for searches that I ran on crawls of the domains on which the Nutch and Webglimpse projects are hosted.

If you're interested in installing and operating your own search engine, there are many other search engines (or components thereof) to choose from.  Many of them are free and open-source.  I've created a separate wiki page to collect these search engine tools.

I feel that I've got as many questions as answers about search engines at this point.  If you have questions or answers too, please feel free to contact me at sfrey at wsulaw dot edu.

UPDATE: I've received a Wolters Kluwer Law & Business Grant to develop a search engine for law-related public domain electronic books.  I intend to set up a wiki or blog to provide occasional updates about the project.
